The Hai Lua project providing housing in the Mekong region of Vietnam
The Hai lua project is an initiative of Darren Flynn Vietnam Country Director of Nexus Foundation Australia. There is a dearth of adequate housing in the Mekong region of Vietnam. Darren Flynn an engineer with the firm GHD is seeking to remediate the situation in participation with indigenous NGO's, local contractors and community organisations. Darren is managing the construction of homes in Bac Lieu. Darren has devoted great time and effort to this initiative, and is particularly passionate about the communities we seek to assist.
Houses are donated to impoverished families
in the region chosen by the Ward/Commune Peoples Committee and Town Women's
Union. The homes are,
designed and supervised by Darren. Each house costs about 7-8 million VND or
approx. 650-750 AUD (depending on the prevailing rate of exchange) and one
of the initiatives conditions is that the house recipients, or relatives
have to contribute money, materials or labour to its construction. This
increases the ownership and sustainability of the new house and obviously
can improve the final outcome. In addition food parcels are provided to give
the new community a helping hand during the embryonic stages of the housing
project. The poorest and most marginalised families and students will be the
focus of the project and these will be selected by the Town’s Women Union
and the Ward/Commune Peoples Committee’s in Bac Lieu. Click here to learn more about Hai Lua
